America Works of New York, Inc. presents:
Successful Client Speaker Series
A Conversation with Lorna Simon Hunte
About the Series
In October 2019, Ms. Lorna Simon Hunte served as a dynamic and candid guest speaker for America Works of New York’s Bronx location. Ms. Hunte’s presentation was part of America Works of New York’s Successful Client Series, where former clients share their experiences before, during, and after their experience with America Works of New York. Her inspiring story, riddled with personal and professional challenges, yet sweet successes, enthralled the audience of more than fifty participants.
Ms. Simon Hunte’s presentation was facilitated through a Question and Answer format, where Ms. Hunte took time to thoughtfully answer questions from the America Works moderator, as well as from the audience. Ms. Hunte began the conversation, noting her years in Trinidad, emigrating to the U.S. to pursue an education, then back to the Caribbean to St. Croix, USVI, and back to New York City.
Explored Careers
Ms. Hunte pursued a handful of career opportunities, seeking to find a space and workplace she felt purposeful and comfortable. She attended and graduated from cosmetology school, and then secured a position in a Bronx hair salon.
Throughout her time at the salon, she felt that the role, while was technically helping others, was not her true calling. Hence, she pursued and earned a cer-tificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
In her work as a CNA, Ms. Hunte found some satisfaction in helping her clients, but was concerned about her satisfaction in the career.
